  80.  public  about what  software was available.  Distributing Shareware
  81.  software  through computer  bulletin  boards  was the  very logical
  82.  solution that  soon  became  standard  procedure for  all Shareware
  83.  authors.  By allowing  programs to be copied  from  bulletin boards
  84.  and shared  with  few  restrictions, Shareware  is able  to reach a
  85.  much greater number of users.

  137.  The shareware concept makes it possible for you to obtain extremely
  138.  powerful software at  a price you can afford, and  it gives you the
  139.  opportunity to try the software before you register.
  140.  The   Association   of   Shareware   Professionals   (ASP),  is  an
  141.  organization  formed to strengthen  the  future of  shareware.  Its
  142.  members, all  of whom are programmers  that subscribe to a  code of
  143.  ethics, are  committed to the concept  of shareware as a  method of
  144.  marketing.
  145.  The ASP sets standards for its members and their shareware products
  146.  which provide  (among other things)  that programs produced  by ASP
  147.  members must be fully documented, non-crippled, and offered with at
  148.  least a minimum level of support.  It also  sets the  standards for
  149.  share ware  disk  vendors  and provides  information to  the public
  150.  about shareware.
  151.  Shareware  software is  a  unique  marketing approach  which allows
  152.  consumers to  purchase  software  directly  from  the author.  This
  153.  eliminates  costly  marketing,  promotion,  and packaging; allowing
  154.  consumers  to  obtain  quality  software   at  a  fraction  of  the
  155.  commercial  cost.  Shareware  authors  allow  their  programs to be
  156.  copied and  distributed with few restrictions.  Shareware users are
  157.  encouraged  to  examine  a  program,  copy  it,  and  pass it on to
  158.  friends.  If users find the software program useful, they are asked
  159.  to register with the software author.  This usually  means paying a
  160.  registration fee directly to the  shareware author.  In  return for
  161.  this  registration fee,  "registered  users"  receive the  right to
  162.  continue  to  use  the  software  and  added  benefits such as full
  163.  documentation,  technical  support,  and   future  updates  of  the
  164.  program.
  165.  Registration is the key to  success for the  shareware concept.  If
  166.  you try  a program and  it does  not  meet your needs,  you are not
  167.  expected to register.  However, if you try a  program, like it, and
  168.  continue  to  use  it,  you  should  compensate  the  author with a
  169.  registration fee.  Registration also insures further development of
  170.  the  program.  Shareware  is  the  "try-before-you-buy"   method of
  171.  software  distribution that  will  literally  save you  hundreds of
  172.  dollars on software purchases.

  203.  of the shareware  program.  These  authors work  many long hours to
  204.  produce  and  test  these  programs  that  are on the SoftwareVAULT
  205.  CD-ROM.  They have earned the right to be paid for their efforts by
  206.  the sweat of their brow.
  207.  The registration price for a shareware is usually very small ($5.00
  208.  -  $85.00 US).  Registering  a  program  brings  with it additional
  209.  benefits.  In most cases, you  will get the  latest version  of the
  210.  program  and   a  printed  manual.  Most   shareware  programs  are
  211.  constantly  being improved  so when  you register,  there is a good
  212.  chance  that  you  will  get  a  newer  version  the  one  you  are

  215.  will also  be free of any  trailers or opening (nag) screens on it,

  629.  DM.EXE is  a full featured  hard disk  menu.  You can add  up to 20
  630.  entries to the  main menu and have unlimited sub  menus of up to 20
  631.  entries each. DM can be run from the command line or also popped up
  632.  in DL or DB by pressing the slash, "/",  key.  When running DM from
  633.  DL or  DB, you can run  programs and add the  highlighted or marked
  634.  files from  DL and DB to  the command line.  In this manner you can
  635.  add your favorite  archive utility to DM, mark a  group of files in

  887.              GETTING STARTED: THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW             
  888.  Each  SoftwareVAULT Collection  contains thousands  of programs and
  889.  resources  of every  size and  variety. To  help you  find your way
  890.  through this  sea of software,  we have included  the SoftwareVAULT
  891.  Librarian program.
  892.  The SoftwareVAULT Librarian is a program that:
  893.  (1) Lets you  sort through the thousands of  programs and resources
  894.      the SoftwareVAULT collections.
  895.  (2) Helps you find programs that interest you.
  896.  (3) Helps  you to transfer  these files and  programs to your  hard
  897.      drive so that you can use them.
  898.  Please note that to use  SoftwareVAULT files you MUST transfer them
  899.  to your hard drive!
  900.  The files on the CD are  compressed and must  be "UNZIPPED" to your
  901.  hard  drive so  they can  be accessed.  (Don't worry, the Librarian
  902.  does this automatically  for you. We "ZIP" our files  up so that we
  903.  can include more software  on each SoftwareVAULT collection, giving
  904.  you more value for your dollar.)
  905.            TUTORIAL: HOW TO USE THE FILES ON THIS DISC           
  906.  You can  use any of  the thousands of  programs and resources  on a
  907.  SoftwareVAULT Collection with just a few easy steps...
  908.  Step 1:  Use one of the "GROUP" buttons to  narrow your search to a
  909.           specific  group of  areas, press  the button  that you are
  910.           most interested in  and you will be presented  with a list
  911.           of  "AREAS". These  "AREAS"  are  a special  collection of
  912.           files covering a specific  subject. Select the "AREA" that
  913.           interestes you  most and press the  "ENTER" key. This will
  914.           give  you a  long list  of files,  each followed  by a one
  915.           sentence description of what that file does. Once you find
  916.           one that looks interesting, you will have several options.
  917.  Step 2:  a. Press "ENTER" to examine the contents of the "ZIP" file
  918.              of view the "GIF" file (picture).
  919.           b. Press the "F6" function  key to view a long description
  920.              of the file. Not all files have  a long description, so
  921.              don't be surprised if it's the same as the one-sentence
  922.              description.
  923.           c. Press the "F10" function key  to copy the file or unzip
  924.              the file  to your hard  drive. Unless you're  a veteran
  925.              SoftwareVAULT  user,  "examine  the  file contents" and
  926.              "copying  the   file  to  your  hard   disk"  might  be
  927.              confusing. THE OPTION YOU  ALMOST ALWAYS NEED TO SELECT
  928.              IS  "UNZIP TO  HARD  DRIVE".  Selecting "Unzip  to hard
  929.              drive" will decompress the file and will transfer it to
  930.              your computer.
  931.  Step 3:  Select the drive and name a directory in which to put your
  932.           file. Once  you've chosen to  unzip the file  to your hard
  933.           disk,  a  directory  selection  menu  will  appear on your
  934.           screen. Choose  the directory you  would like to  hold the
  935.           file. IT'S USUALLY  A GOOD IDEA TO CREATE  A NEW DIRECTORY
  936.           FOR A  ZIP FILE. Don't worry.  The SoftwareVAULT Librarian
  937.           can do this automatically. Simply  make up a new directory
  938.           name and type it in  the directory box. The Librarian will
  939.           ask you if you want to "create the directory", and when it
  940.           does, answer "Yes".
  941.  Step 4:  Use your file. Exit the Librarian and  go to the directory
  942.           you created to hold your file. You will discover that your
  943.           one ZIP  file has probably decompressed  into a collection
  944.           of smaller files. To start  the program, look for the file
  945.           with an ".EXE"  on the end of it's name.  This is the main
  946.           executable for  the program. Running  it should start  the
  947.           program! Executable files may also have a ".COM" extension
  948.           or a ".BAT" extension.
  949.                       HELP WITH MENU ITEMS                       
  950.  1) FILE
  951.      1.   a) Change CD-ROM
  952.           Select   "Change  CD-ROM"   to  use   other  SoftwareVAULT
  953.           Collections. When  you select "Change  CD-ROM" be sure  to
  954.           place disc you would like to use in your CD-ROM drive.
  955.           Note: In  order to change  to a specific  CD-ROM disc, you
  956.           must have  specified that you  would like to  install that
  957.           disc  during the  installation procedure.  Also, make sure
  958.           that the correct data path  and drive have been specified.
  959.           If you  are running directly from  the CD-ROM, this option
  960.           will be disabled.
  961.      1.   b) Exit
  962.           Select "Exit" to exit the SoftwareVAULT Librarian.
  963.      1.   c) Export Files Listing
  964.           Saves a partial  or complete list of the  files with their
  965.           one line descriptions to a variety of file formats. Select
  966.           the file format and the category listings you wish to have
  967.           saved.
  968.      1.   d) Print Files Listing/Printer Setup
  969.           Prints  a files  listing and  configures your  printer for
  970.           printing.  For the  appropriate configuration,  check your
  971.           system and your printer instructions.
  972.      1.   e) DOS Shell
  973.           Allows you  to exit the Librarian  temporarily to use DOS.
  974.           Type "Exit" at the DOS prompt to return to the Librarian.
  975.  2) CONTENTS
  976.      "Contents" allows you to explore SoftwareVAULT in two different
  977.      ways with either "Group Browser" or "Category Browser". It also
  978.      contains "Hottest Hits Info" and "Statistics".
  979.      2.   b) Group Browser
  980.           Brings up  an array of  buttons. Each button  highlights a
  981.           certain topic  of software. Click  on a button  to explore
  982.           the  categories contained  in  that  group. Clicking  on a
  983.           specific category will bring up a complete list of all the
  984.           programs and resources contained in that category. See the
  985.           Tutorial section of this help file to see how to use these
  986.           programs.
  987.      2.   c) Browse-Copy Files
  988.           If  you  don't  want  to  use  the  group buttons, you can
  989.           explore  the  entire  database.  Clicking  on  a  specific
  990.           category will bring up a complete list of all the programs
  991.           and resources contained in  the complete database. See the
  992.           Tutorial section of this help file to see how to use these
  993.           programs.
  994.      2.   d) Hottest Hits
  995.           Each  SoftwareVAULT collection  contains an  assortment of
  996.           the  very best  shareware  programs  on the  market today.
  997.           "Hottest  Hits" Info  contains complete  reviews of  these
  998.           outstanding programs.
  999.      2.   e) Statistics
  1000.           "Statistics"  provides  a  statistical  breakdown  on  the
  1001.           makeup of this SoftwareVAULT Collection.
  1002.  3) SEARCH
  1003.      The SoftwareVAULT  Librarian allows you to  hunt for files that
  1004.      interest you in two different ways:
  1005.      3.   a) Find Filename
  1006.           Allows  you to  find files  based on  their title.  Type a
  1007.           title into  the "Find a  File" box and  click on the  "OK"
  1008.           button. The  Librarian will assemble  a list of  the files
  1009.           with  titles similar  to the  one you  specified. See  the
  1010.           Tutorial section of this help file to see how to use these
  1011.           programs.
  1012.      3.   b) Find Text
  1013.           Allows  you  to  run  a  keyword  search  to find files on
  1014.           certain subjects. Type a keyword into the "Find Text" box.
  1015.           The Librarian  will sort through  the descriptions of  all
  1016.           the files  on the disc and  will assemble a list  of files
  1017.           with subjects  related to your  keyword. See the  Tutorial
  1018.           section  of  this  help  file  to  see  how  to  use these
  1019.           programs.
  1020.  4) TEXT
  1021.      The  text files  contain information  on how  the SoftwareVAULT
  1022.      collections are  assembled and how  you can register  shareware
  1023.      programs requiring registration.
  1024.  5) ALL CD's
  1025.      Selecting "All CD's" allows you call  up a master file list for
  1026.      other SoftwareVAULT  collections. You can either  view a master
  1027.      list  for all  the SoftwareVAULT  collections or  you can  view
  1028.      lists  for specific  collections.  The  viewer used  to examine
  1029.      these files can  search the list for keywords  as well as print
  1030.      them out.
  1031.  6) HELP
  1032.      Selecting help opens this help file.
  1033.                        GIF PICTURE VIEWER                        
  1034.      The  Software  Librarian  allows  you  to  view GIFS (digitized
  1035.      pictures found  in Category #16  of most collections)  directly
  1036.      off the SoftwareVAULT disc. Select "Examine file contents" from
  1037.      the "File Operations" box to view a GIF picture.
  1038.      Note: Loading  a GIF picture  for viewing takes  a few moments.
